GUNMEN STRIKE AGAIN IN ANAMBRA, POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN DEADLY CHECKPOINT AMBUSH
By Ibekwe Blessing Ijeoma
Gunmen launched an attack on a police checkpoint near the Nnobi Police Station, located on the Nnobi/Nkpor Road in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of a policeman. According to local sources, the officer killed on Friday was the driver of one of the police vehicles.
Reports indicate that the gunmen infiltrated the community, staying in a house close to the checkpoint. They breached a wall to gain access to the compound and coerced the residents into opening the gate to allow their vehicles inside. The assailants also confiscated the residents' phones, forced them into a room, and threatened to shoot if they raised an alarm.
This incident occurred less than three weeks after a similar attack on a police checkpoint on Omata-Nnobi Road in Nnewi, where another police officer was killed, and an explosive device was used in the assault.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the attack and stated that the situation was under control. He mentioned that an ongoing operation had been initiated in the area under the directive of the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam. Further details are expected to be released as the situation develops.
