DISCREPANCIES EXPOSED: N34.7 MILLION ABIA ROAD PROJECT DETERIORATES WITHIN A YEAR.
By Ibekwe Blessing Ijeoma
A N34.7 million road project in Umunneochi LGA, Abia State, has been revealed to have significant discrepancies, according to Tracka, the public expenditure tracking platform by BudgIt. Originally listed as a 5 km road, the project turned out to be only a 500-meter stretch constructed in Ugwamabiri, a village in the Obinolu community. Although the road was completed and asphalted early last year, it is already showing signs of deterioration, prompting concerns about the quality of work. Tracka has called on the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) to investigate the project and ensure the contractor addresses the substandard construction.
Tracka also highlighted that despite the significant funds allocated, the road is already experiencing poor quality and premature damage. The platforms findings have raised questions about the transparency and effectiveness of the project execution. They are urging NBRRI to conduct a thorough review and take immediate action to rectify the issues, emphasizing the need for accountability in public projects to prevent further waste of resources and ensure that such infrastructures meet required standards.
