The hospital is expected to be extremely clean, and free of bacteria and other microorganisms, but most times the reverse is the case, though there is no environment that is 100% free from microorganisms, because microorganisms are everywhere at all times. A diabetic patient, and a patient without a strong immune system are likely to be susceptible to other infections. Most of these infection are gotten from the hospital, and is termed Nosocomial Infection.
Nosocomial infections, also called health-care-associated or hospital-acquired infections, are a subset of infectious diseases acquired in a health-care facility.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a nosocomial infection as an infection that is diagnosed after 48 hours of admission without evidence that the patient had the Infection before coming to the hospital. Bacteria that causes Nosocomial Infections include; Staphylococcus aureus, Psedomonas aeroginosa, klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus etc.
People that are at risk of Nosocomial Infections are; Patients with Diabetes, those using urinary catheter, those having malnutrition, those having chronic lung disease, those with low immunity, those using excessive or Improper broad spectrum antibiotics, those on prolonged hospitalizations.
Most Health care center have inappropriate waste management, No availability of disinfectant around the patient ward, which easily allows the patient to be infected with Bacteria, thereby decreasing their chance of getting well quick, and increasing their time in the hospital with more money to spend.
