UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA CELEBRATES THE DEPARTURE OF CONTROVERSIAL VICE CHANCELLOR NA'ALLAH IN JOYFUL DEMONSTRATION
The atmosphere at the University of Abuja remains charged as the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch amplifies calls for government intervention. The union expressed regret over the tenure of former Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, citing missed opportunities and controversial decisions that led to widespread dissatisfaction.
On June 2, 2024, the university community, including students and staff, gathered for a peaceful demonstration of thanksgiving, celebrating the end of what they termed a "retrogressive period" under Na’Allah's leadership. The campus was filled with joy and relief as participants expressed their happiness over his departure. The ASUU branch Chairman, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, highlighted that Na'Allah's authoritative leadership included suspending students and increasing school fees by 300%, which contributed significantly to the unrest.
Speaking to journalists after the demonstration, Dr. Ugoh emphasized the union's readiness to engage with the new management, led by Prof. Aisha Maikudi, to address lingering issues. “We are celebrating the exit of a vice chancellor who, in our view, destroyed this university over the last five years. University of Abuja fell from ninth to 27th position, marking a period of significant setbacks,” Dr. Ugoh stated.
The former ASUU branch chairman, Dr. Kassim Umar, urged the Federal Government to intervene, lamenting the policies of the past leadership. “We pray that even our worst enemy never witnesses what we endured under Prof. Na’Allah. Despite numerous visits and attempts to reason with him, he remained unyielding. We hope Prof. Maikudi will address these issues so that peace can return.”
The university community's joy at Na'Allah's departure was palpable, with students and staff hopeful for a better future under new leadership. The ASUU branch remains prepared to engage in dialogue to resolve ongoing issues and restore normalcy to the university.
