BAUCHI EMIRATE STRIPS APC SENATOR OF TRADITIONAL TITLE FOR ‘INSULTING’ GOV MOHAMMED
By: Kingsley O. Bayode
The Bauchi Emirate Council has officially revoked the traditional title of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents the Bauchi South senatorial district in the National Assembly. This decision follows allegations that Senator Umar, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), publicly insulted and criticized Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.
During a press briefing last week, Senator Umar, who previously held the title of 'Mandarin Bauchi', accused Governor Mohammed of misappropriating palliative items provided by the APC-led federal government. He claimed that essential supplies intended to alleviate economic hardship in the state were sold by the state government instead of being distributed to the people.
In a letter dated August 14, 2024, the Bauchi Emirate Council stated that the title withdrawal was a result of a council meeting held on Wednesday, where Senator Umar's alleged misconduct was discussed. The council resolved to remove him from his traditional role within the emirate, citing that his behavior contradicted the values and traditions upheld by the Bauchi Emirate.
