DEMOCRACY — A NAME ONLY.
We are said to be a democratic country,
But there is no trace of sympathy.
We are called a democratic nation,
Yet our voices are drowned in the wind.
We are told we live in a democratic state,
But the powerful rule unchecked.
We are said to be democratic,
Yet we cannot voice our thoughts or opinions.
We are labelled a democracy,
But the people are slaves to power.
We are said to be a democratic state,
Where those in power abuse authority.
We are said to be a free nation,
Yet still enslaved by our own shadows.
What, then, is democracy?
When our opinions don’t count—when silence is safer.
Democracy! Democracy! Democracy!
The government of the people,
By the people, for the people.
What an irony.
