HAS THE TOMB OF QUEEN CLEOPATRA BEEN FOUND? WILL IT EVER BE?

For years and years no effort has been spared in searching for the tomb of the infamous Cleopatra. Could it have been found after so many years? what will this mean for the archaeological world?

Who was Cleopatra?

Cleopatra vii philopator of Greek origin was the queen of the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BC and its last active ruler. She ruled the kingdom alongside her younger brother Ptolemy xiv until their falling out in 49 Bc which led to a civil war. She had an affair with Julius Caesar and birthed him a son. Cleopatra was married to Marc Anthony, a Roman general and politician. Together they had 3 more children.

Cleopatra's death

After the defeat of Cleopatra and her husband, Marc Anthony by Octavian- more famously known as Augustus, the first Roman emperor- Cleopatra died by suicide to avoid being paraded as a war prisoner between the 10th and 12th of August 30 BC. Although there has been debate over her precise cause of death, it is more widely speculated that she died by means of an asp; which is a poisonous Egyptian serpent and a symbol of divine royalty.

Has Cleopatra's tomb been found?

During excavations at taposiris magna- the site believed by the Egyptian Antiquities Service to house the tomb of Cleopatra and her husband Marc Anthony- led by archaeologist Kathleen Martinez and her team, they discovered a 4200 feet long and 42 ft deep tunnel. Also discovered was a religious centre with more than 1,500 artifacts, bust, statues, gold coins, a huge collection of coins representing Alexander the Great, Queen Cleopatra and the Ptolemies. Also, according to Kathleen Martinez  in her interview with CNN, the most interesting discovery is the complex of tunnels leading to the Mediterranean Sea and the sunken structures.

What could this mean for the archaeological world? Could Kathleen Martinez after nearly two decades of research have made the discovery of the century? Could the clues be correct? And could it be that Cleopatra's tomb after all this time has finally been found?
