FG PLANNING TO INTRODUCE NYSC LIKE SCHEME FOR NCE STUDENT

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Youth Development, has announced plans to introduce a new training scheme similar to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). This move aims to provide NCE holders with equivalent training opportunities, as they are currently excluded from participating in the NYSC scheme unless they pursue further education.
Minister of State for Youth Development, Olawande Wisdom, revealed that the ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Education to implement new training reforms, including a state-based training program for NCE holders. This initiative seeks to provide young people with valuable skills and keep them engaged, reminiscent of past youth training programs like the Boys Brigade and Girl Guides.
Wisdom made this announcement during the 2024 opening of the "Be More Oyo" boot camp in Ibadan, founded by Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, wife of former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. He emphasized the importance of youth training and development, stating that his ministry's major priority is citizenship and training.
The minister commended Anyanwu-Akeredolu for her efforts in advocating for the development of the girl child and called for support for other organizations championing the cause of women and girls in Nigeria. Anyanwu-Akeredolu's initiative focuses on nurturing female leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), highlighting the importance of inclusivity for national development.
She emphasized that Nigeria cannot achieve development if 50% of its population, comprising women and girls, are left behind. The introduction of this new training scheme for NCE holders is a step towards providing more opportunities for young people to develop their skills and contribute to the country's growth.
